Teaching · From the source text

Zen Master Seung Sahn

Zen Master Seung Sahn's core teaching: 'Who am I?', 'Only don't know' (Musangsa)

Who am I? Only don't know.

In 1972, at the age of 46, Seung Sahn travelled to America. For a few months he supported himself by repairing washing machines at a laundromat in Providence, Rhode Island, and Brown University students soon began coming to his small apartment to ask about life and Zen practice. His core teaching was simple: 'Who am I?' and 'Only don't know.' When we insist on knowing every answer in advance, the mind grows restless. When we simply admit that we do not know, we can return to what is in front of us.

To reflect onWhat future outcome are you frantically trying to control right now?
