Ven. Seongcheol

Dharma message on being named Supreme Patriarch of the Jogye Order (1981)

Mountains are mountains; water is water.

We rarely see things as they are; we keep pasting labels on them: 'This person is good,' 'That task is awful.' Ven. Seongcheol, who practiced for eight years without lying down to sleep, was named the seventh Supreme Patriarch of the Jogye Order in 1981. Instead of attending the ceremony, he issued a dharma message: 'Mountains are mountains; water is water.' Read as a reflection today, the line invites us to take off the glasses of desire and bias and see things as they are, so that needless resentment can ease.

To reflect onWhat person or situation in your life have you overly burdened with negative labels?
